History of the Sauerland Museum
In 1605, electoral prince Ernst von Bayern (1583–1612) had the Landsberger Hof, today’s Sauerland Museum built for his mistress, Jungfer Gertrud von Plettenberg (d. 1609). Here, you can discover the history of the Sauerland region under the Electorate of Cologne, with its many different connections, from the beginnings until the years after the Second World War.
Situated in the charming old town centre of Arnsberg, the Sauerland Museum in the historically important Landsberger Hof building tells the many-faceted story of Sauerland under the Electorate of Cologne, from the early years to the present day. Numerous original artefacts from the Balver Höhle cave, as well as beautiful models and exhibits, bring the exciting history of this region to life. The permanent exhibition is supplemented by special exhibitions with different themes. Guided tours, education programmes and children’s birthdays are provided by arrangement.
