The former military training area is now a large area of pastureland grazed by herds of wild cattle, horses, goats and sheep. The flower-covered rough pastures are habitats and refuge for endangered plant and bird species.

On the former military training area of Apricke, Heck cattle and Dülmen horses today graze the pastures. Heck cattle are the result of so-called targeted back-breeding aimed at creating similar animals to the extinct wild Auerochs, while the endangered Dülmen horses resemble the also extinct European Wild Horse. As both breeds are extremely tough and frugal, they characterize the Apricke landscape even in winter. The grazing keeps the rough pastureland in a state that is suitable for rare breeding birds like the Meadow Pipit and the Stonechat. Tree Pipits, Yellowhammers and Red-backed Shrikes also breed in the area.

In summer nights you can hear the calls of Midwife Toads.

Destination

car park called "Eingang Deilinghofer Straße des Sauerlandparks Hemer" next to the sports ground.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the car park, the trail leads northward and goes past the former tank wash. It then turns eastward towards the village of Apricke. The trail skirts around the village and eventually arcs back to the starting point. You can also shorten the route if you so wish. For instance, on the route "Wilde Weiden" (wild pastures) (4.3 km, 1 h 15 mins) the village of Apricke is only touched and not walked round. Alternatively, you could only circle the fruit garden (1.7 km, 30 mins).

Die beste Nutzung eines ehemaligen Militärgeländes. Schön wäre es, wenn die Hunde an der Leine geführt werden müssten.
