Beech and swamp forests far from civilization – on the mountain ridges between the Veischede and Olpe valleys only the small hamlet of Apollmicke and an old forester's house interrupt the dense forest.

The nature reserve comprises one of the largest unbroken areas of Beech forest complexes in the central and western Sauerland. Particularly valuable features of the area are Beech forests that are up to 190 years old, interspersed with shallow stream-source basins and small streams with their swamp woodland and Alder forest fringes.

In the ancient Beech forests, there are many trees with cavities that provide nesting places for the breeding populations of Tengmalm's Owl, Black Woodpecker and Grey-headed Woodpecker. Since 2004, the imposing Black Stork has regularly raised its young here. If you visit the area very early or late on springtime days, you can observe the display flights of the Woodcock. The swamp forest and stream-fringing Alder forests are characterised by the occurrence of Downy Birch, Deer Fern, Marsh Violet and various sphagnum moss species. However, the largest botanical treasure of the area is the Lesser Twayblade, an orchid species that is endangered in the whole of Germany. The Einsiedelei forest is the only location for this orchid in North Rhine-Westphalia. The nearest other sites of this rare plant are in southern Lower Saxony and in Thuringia.

Turn-by-turn directions

The area is located directly on the hiking trail called "Wanderweg der Deutschen Einheit" (Aachen-Görlitz, X 8). A 5.6 km long circular trail takes you along well-constructed forest paths. From the car park, the route initially follows the X 8 trail in a north-easterly direction, then southwest along the X 5 to the old forestry lodge. After that, the trail marked by an upside-down "T" takes you up to the Wolfhardt and then downhill again towards Rahrbach. Halfway down, turn north at the white triangle. Along the "Rahrbacher Weidekamps" the trail leads up to a hut on the ridge. A beautiful view over the forests of the Bilstein highlands to the foothills of the Ebbegebirge mountains awaits you there. Then you rejoin the X 8 trail and hike in a north-easterly direction back to the car park.

Schöner, abwechslungsreicher Weg. Das Schlussstück über den breiten Forstweg war ein wenig eintönig.
