If you should plan a trip to Altena, to visit the impressive castle, we recommend this diverting circular route. It allows you to combine exercise with nature and culture, in addition to Altena castle you will see two other small "castles" and during the circumnavigation of the Klusenberg you will immerse in the mossy mythical Sauerland forest.

At the beginning, the tour will lead alongside the Lenne river, past Holtzbrinck castle. The representative building dates back to the 16th century and has a lovely rococo garden with view of the Lenne river. The Holtzbrinck castle, which accommodated the administrative district office once, is a culture centre, place of event and community centre today.

The Burgweg will lead you up to the Altena castle. There is where you will continue your walk on the nature trail that leads into the wood. You will pass the memorial and the green classroom. At the first Zickzack you will descend to the mythical well by the side of the road. You might even forget about the Steinsbörnchen, about which you will have learned more during the exciting ride with the adventure elevator to the Altena castle.

On your way back to Altena you will pass the Mückenburg and the German wire museum. Opposite the museum is Hotel am Markt (closed on Sundays) and a few steps further down the Café zu Burg. After so much culture, nature and exercise and before walking the last bit back to the parking space you might wish to regenerate and enjoy a fine plain meal.

Author’s recommendation

After dark and in the month of July, fireflies illuminate the road around Altena castle.

Eine schöne Tour. Teilweise sehr steil und schmal Wege, also aufpassen ☝️
