At an altitude of up to 818 metres, the Hunau mountain ridge is one of the highest places in North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition to large stands of deciduous trees, it has two moors, a habitat that is rare in the Sauerland region.

The Hunau ridge extends for about 14 kilometres between the villages of Siedlinghausen in the northeast and Bad Fredeburg in the southwest. The nature reserve "Hunau–Langer Rücken–Heidberg" consists of extensive Beech-dominated mixed woodlands with small ravine forests, near-natural springs, small streams and rock outcrops. Special features are the two 8,000-year-old mountainside spring moors called "Nasse Wiese" and "Rauhes Bruch", which have been a nature reserve since 1955.

The Reserve holds a broad range of rare plants: cotton grasses, orchids, the Bogbean and the Bog Cranberry, which is found nowhere else in the Hochsauerland District. A rare species of dragonfly, the Large White-faced Darter, also finds a suitable habitat here.

Grazing by cattle of the old highland breed "Rotes Höhenvieh" prevents the valuable habitats from being lost to encroaching scrub vegetation.

In spring you will see the early flowers like the Spring Snowflake and the Wood Anemone blooming in the undergrowth. Above them, the Tau Emperor, a diurnal species of moth cavorts in the spring sunshine.

Destination

Hiking car park "Unterm Nonnenstein"

Turn-by-turn directions

Starting from the car park, cross the road and hike the trail marked B4, which has a length of about 7.9 kilometres. To do so, turn right after the second pedestrian bridge and walk uphill in the direction of the "Nasse Wiese". The climb is strenuous, but it's worth it!

If you wish to see the second moor, turn off onto trail X25 at the "Nasse Wiese" and follow the trail to the "Rauher Bruch", and then return to the starting point on the same path. The cul-de-sac access trail has a length of about 1.8 kilometres there and back.

You can shorten your hike on the B4 trail if you turn onto trail X25 after the "Hundegrab", and then follow the B4 back to the car park. This route variant has a length of approx. 6.3 kilometres.
