The numerous streams are the arteries of the Sauerland. But water alone does not make a stream. The Orke with its wealth of floodplain and river dwellers shows this impressively.

In the course of the European LIFE project - Module for Natura 2000 - the Orke stream was restored to a near-natural condition through the implementation of numerous renaturation measures. Passability through the entire watercourse was restored for Brown Trout, Brook Lamprey and Bullhead by reconstruction or bypassing of 22 transverse structures. The Black Stork also benefited from the renaturation because it now has a far better food supply. Plantations of Spruce and Hybrid Poplars were removed and the land they occupied was converted into grassland, which is now farmed in a manner compatible with nature conservation aims.

Follow the discovery trail along the Orke stream. 13 information stations provide interesting information about habitats, animals, birds and plants, the previous use of the stream and the nature conservation measures implement under the LIFE project.

Safety information

Some parts of the Orke Stream Trail take you off hard-surfaced paths, leading you through meadows and cattle pastures and into the floodplain. For the experience tour on sometimes wet and slippery paths, you are advised to wear waterproof, sturdy footwear.

Please do not feed the grazing animals (cattle, horses, goats, ducks).

Unsuitable food can cause life-threatening diseases in the animals.
